When it comes to old books, I love everything about them...the smell, the history, the well-worn pages that can only be achieved with the passing of time and many, many reads.
When I came across this set last year, I couldn't pass them up:
Before Google answered all of our questions and Wikipedia made us feel smarter, this set of 14 early 1900's "Book of Knowledge" might have come in very handy... IF, for instance, you needed to know how to construct a "Modeltown Villa," quote poetry, or even plant a spring flower garden.
So...maybe they will no longer serve a practical purpose; but they sure will make a great collection on a client's office bookshelves. . . just not in that color.
Since we were going for the monochromatic look of these Restoration Hardware shelves,
a little grey paint was in order to tie the collection together and make a beautiful statement in the office.
I love Benjamin Moore sample pots for this reason:
Maybe Horizon wasn't the color for my walls; but it works just fine for a set of old books.
An hour or so later, we have our collection ready for a client's home:
Tonight, though, I think I'm going to give "The Book of Knowledge" a try and see what I can learn:
